Formatting the virtual hard disk image.

Formatting the virtual disk partition.

  1. On the previous page you rebooted the Virtual PC.
After running fdisk and rebooting the Virtual PC we need to format the virtual hard disk.
You'll notice from the screenshot that tried to find the drive letter for the hard disk.
I tried Drive T:, it wasn't there. (I thought it wouldn't be, but I wanted to see what it would say when I attempted to access a non-existant drive)
I tried Drive C: and it replied that drive C: had an 'invalid media byte' That is a sure sign of a disk that has not been formatted :-)
I pressed a to abort (Abort, Retry, Fail?a) and then started the format.
  2. Type in the command to format the virtual hard disk image.
    format c: /s
This tells it to format drive C and copy over the basic system files so that C: will be bootable.

The format program issued a warning that it was about to erase all the data on Drive C
I replied Y to tell it to go ahead.
  3. After formatting the drive wants a 'label'.

This is the 'Name' of the hard drive. In Windows 98 it will show up in Windows explorer as the drive name.
I called it Win98 Type in the drive label you want. It really doesn't matter what you call it.
  4. Whoooopee!!
We now have a formatted, bootable Virtual C drive.
We can test it by going to the C: drive by typing in
    C: (press the enter key)
    dir (press the enter key)
It tells us that Drive C is labeled WIN98 and it has the required COMMAND.COM file on it.

The CD ROM drive with the windows 98 install programs in it is assigned to Drive E:
We can see it by typing in
    e: (press the enter key)
    dir (press the enter key)
Notice the WINDOWS 98 SETUP.EXE program. we need to run that to install windows 98 onto the new Virtual C: drive
  5. Now we finally install windows98!
    enter the command
    setup (press the enter key)
Setup will run, and do some stuff, like checking the drives...

  6. When scan disk completes... it is time to install...

Follow the onscreen prompts, and continue to install Windows 98.
  7. When It tells you to remove any floppys and reboot the machine you will need to disconnect the virtual floppy.
If you used a physical floppy disk remove it from the floppy drive.
If you used the virtual floppy disk use the menu to release the floppy disk image.

    Then reboot the virtual PC
You can either use the menu, or press Right-Alt + Del
