Virtual voice for Yahoo on Vista
Vista, Virtual PC 2007, Windows 98
Putting it all together
Get the files You'll need
On this page we'll gather all the items required to install Virtual PC, install them and set them up.
I recommend you
save ALL the downloads in one folder so you know where they are.
For example, a folder called
VPC on your desktop.
I'm going to assume that is where you save them, and will refer to that folder.
If you save them to some other folder you'll have to susbstitute the folder name you used for wherever I refer to the
VPC folder.
Remember to use your browsers
Save As function when downloading to save them to the
VPC folder.
-
Download microsoft Virtual PC 2007 direct from Microsoft. get the version marked 32bit/setup.exe
download Virtual PC 2007
-
Download the windows 98 boot floppy image in VFD 'Virtual Floppy Drive' format.
win98seboot.zip from roudybob (unzip it and extract win98seboot.VFD)
If you get this .zip file, you can make things simpler later by waiting for it to download and then extract the win98seboot.VFD file from the win98seboot.zip archive.
1) go to your desktop and double click on the VPC folder.
2) doubleclick win98seboot.zip
3) drag the win98seboot.VFD file into the VPC folder.
We'll use this file soon.
or get the one I used win98seboot.VFD and save it in the VPC folder.
You could also use an original win98 boot floppy disk if you have one that has the CDROM drivers installed.

Some handy tools for the virtual PC
-
If you are going to be converting files or Folders to .ISO images you can use Winimage, ISO_Recorder or a similar program.
ISO_Recorder for Vista is available here (get the 32-bit version)
alexfeinman.com
After installing it you can right click on any folder and select Create ISO Image File
Install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007
Run the setup.exe program to install Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 that you downloaded and saved in the
VMC folder.
It is officially supported on Vista Ultimate and Vista Business, meaning they will provide telephone support (for a fee) for users of those Vista versions.
If you get a message about your Vista version not being a 'supported version' it means that Microsoft does not offer telephone support.
It runs fine on Vista Basic and Vista Premium also.

important note
When you are running the Virtual PC, it can 'capture' your mouse.
Your mouse pointer will be confined to the Virtual PC window.
If you need to click on the virtual PC menu you may find that the mouse pointer
just won't go there.
If you experience this (and it is normal and correct operation)
you can release your mouse pointer by pressing the keyboard Right-ALT key
while moving the mouse.
This will release the mouse so you can move it to anywhere on your Vista screen.
Please remember: if your mouse gets 'captured' use the Right-Alt to free your mouse.
-
A Network boot screen will appear.
Click the Menu item labeled Floppy
We want to give the new virtual PC a floppy drive :-)
If you have a real physical windows 98 boot floppy you can use that.
If not you can use the the win98seboot.VFD floppy drive image we downloaded earlier and saved in the Desktop VPC Folder.
-
Now that the Virtual PC has a floppy drive, reboot the virtual PC. (yes you can reboot it without rebooting your main PC)
You can either use the menu, or press Right-Alt + Del

-
Repeat the process in a similar way to use the Windows 98 Boot CD.
You can either use the Real Windows 98 BOOT CD (put it in your CD ROM drive, or you can use the
windows 98 CDROM ISO image if you have one of those.

Select the CD or CD image that contains the Windows 98 install data.
Im not showing that setp here.. its pretty much the same as you did for the floppy..
-
Reboot the Virtual PC in the same way we did earlier.
You can either use the menu, or press Right-Alt + Del

-
You should get a boot menu like this

We have now a newly created Virtual PC hard disk image.
It needs to be prepared, just like a real hard disk.
In the next pages we'll use
- fdisk to create partitions on the virtual hard disk
- format to format the partition and install boot files.
- setup from the windows 98 CD To install Windows 98.
